Precious Paper

In A Tale For The Time Being, I was completely captivated by the short phrase said by Haruki#1 in his secret French dairy which is "Paper is precious" because it brought to my attention the importance of paper in allowing the readers to connect their moments with Nao and Haruki#1 (320). Without paper, the readers may of not gotten the chance to connect their moments with Nao and Haruki#1 and connect through time to hear of their thoughts as they lived through their own lives in their own timeline. It is important to understand why paper is precious because it is the one of the main medium that allows us to  connect with other people's moments and have our instant to "arise" and "to do good in the world" through our understanding of their stories (324).

To start off, Haruki's secret French dairy is our connection to him as readers because of the paper that allows us to his words and get a grasp of his feelings. For example, without paper we may of not been able to imagine the eyes "filled with pity" that Haruki #1 had as he looked at "F----- straight in the eye" (321).  The reason is that paper gives us the opportunity and "moment" to see those words and share a connection with Haruki#1 as he beaten while we look with pity and sadness at his situation maybe even wishing that we could help him. Although we can not be able to help Haruki #1 in removing his pain, our moment shared with him because of the paper may be that special instant we learn to push for these kind of things to happen less and do some good for world. We can infer that paper is precious since it can allows us to rapidly or gradually experience the emotions of Haruki#1 as he is "like a person who is already dead" and we can determine how we act in our life because of it (328).

When looking at Nao's words, we are granted many moments because of paper to see Nao's change in perspective of herself and her life through certain parts of her story. For example, paper grants us an opportunity to see how Nao "making the decision to end" her life brings a sense of peace to her because she can give "appreciation for the moments of" her life (332). The opportunity for us with Nao is important because we can connect our moments with her joy to be "born into the world all over again" when she decided to end her life and grasp understanding of what those with Nao's thoughts may feel (332). However, just as we can connect to her joy because she has given the moments in her life more appreciation, we can also feel the shift in her mental state as "Nobody sees" her as she seems more empty and feels that "this is it" (341). The reason why understanding that connection is helpful is because we can realize that our shared moments with Nao during that time can gives us similar feeling as she did at that moment and we can examine in our life if we have were ever invisible and whether we should let that happen to people.

Overall, paper is precious because of the opportunity it gives us to connect with other people and with regards to A Tale For The Time Being it also means we can connect to different time beings. Understanding why paper is precious is very important because we can make sure that when we use paper we are using it wisely but also efficiently if we want to connect to others. Paper is not just something to write our words on, but rather it is opportunity to connect to those across time with our emotions and thoughts even though we may not see them in our eyes. While we connect with others, we also learn from the papers we read from the present and past and gain a grasp of others mainly because paper gave us a medium to connect and share our moments.
